Taekwondo is a Korean martial art practised by over 60 million people in 184 countries. The highly dynamic techniques and the fast, often spectacular, kicks makes it a unique martial art.
Taekwondo is a very effective combat and self-defence system.
It promotes flexibility, strength, stamina and focus and it's therefore an effective and entertaining form of physical exercise.
Taekwondo practice is deeply rooted in fundamental principles of personal development, self-improvement and unity of body, mind and spirit. The practice of Taekwondo cultivates focus, determination, self-esteem and self-discipline and it extends into every aspect of daily life. The five tenets of Taekwondo are: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control and Indomitable Spirit.
Taekwondo made its debut as an official Olympic sport at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. It is now also a Commonwealth Games sport. At London 2012 Olympic Games British athlete Jade Jones won a Gold medal. Taekwondo is a safe sport and can be practised by everybody, either competitively or for fitness.
